BDSM and Intimate Partner Violence Training

As with every type of relationship, intimate partner violence (IPV) can occur in relationships that include consensual BDSM. Now NCSF (National Coalition of Sexual Freedom) can educate your local victim service providers about the difference between kink and abuse.

NCSF is offering a free, half-day training for victim service providers on how to work effectively with kinky people. After completing this intensive workshop, participants will leave with the cultural competency to serve clients who incorporate BDSM into their intimate relationships.

Topics will include:
  • BDSM-affirming language to use during intake
  • Research about BDSM participants and why they may be reluctant to reach out to service providers
  • Composite case studies of situations handled by the NCSF and trained IPV service providers
On-site training is available for locations in, or within an hour from, the metropolitan Washington D.C. area. Otherwise, training will take place over an online platform like Google Hangouts or Skype. (if on-site training is desired outside the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, requesting agency will be responsible for travel and lodging costs.)

Facilitator Information:
Ashley Hammond brings experience in training development and group facilitation to her work. She has extensive knowledge of the BDSM community and an understanding of the latest research in violence prevention. Ashley is working towards her PhD at Widener University Center for Human Sexuality Studies.

Sponsoring Organization:
The National Coalition for Sexual Freedom is committed to creating a political, legal, and social environment in the United States that advances the equal rights of consenting adults who practice forms of alternative sexual and relationship expression. NCSF advances the rights and advocates for consenting adults in the BDSM-Leather-Fetish, swing, and polyamory communities. We pursue our vision through direct services, education, advocacy, and outreach in conjunction with our partner organizations to directly benefit these communities.

Conferences

Midwest Bi-Sexuality Conference: UM-Twin Cities
BECAUSE 2016

My Identities, My Life

This year's theme will create space to center and honor the intersections of our multiple identities. Often times, we find ourselves in spaces where we are forced to choose which identities we bring to the table. By isolating our identities, we create barriers to authentic conversations, moments of solidarity and personal growth.

This conference will support an environment where we'll combat identity erasure, create meaningful relationships, empower members of our community, and further educate the community on what it means to be bi+. The BECAUSE Conference is the annual conference of the Bisexual Organizing Project.

Participate in the MN Transgender Aging Project

Rainbow Health Initiative and Dr. Abel Knochel of the University of Minnesota, Duluth, are seeking volunteers to participate in a research study with transgender older adults in the Twin Cities and Arrowhead regions. This study seeks to explore:
  • What medical and aging resources are available for transgender older adults?
  • How do transgender older adults experience health and aging services in the Twin Cities and Arrowhead regions?
  • What do health and aging services need to better serve this population?
Interested in participating?
Transgender people (people who identify with a gender that differs from the gender they were
assigned at birth) over age 60 who live or use services in the Twin Cities or Arrowhead regions are eligible to participate.

Participants will be asked to complete a confidential interview or focus group about their experience with health and/or aging services and will receive a $50 gift card.

Call Dylan Flunker at 612-206-3180 or email agingproject@rainbowhealth.org to learn more.

2016 MN LGBT Resources Guide

Inclusive and respectful services for LGBT older adults can go unnoticed and unused simply because of fear. A 2012 survey of Twin Cities LGBT older adults showed fewer than one in five believed they would receive sensitive services if a provider knew they were a member of the LGBT community. This second publication of the Twin Cities LGBT Aging Resource Guide helps address this barrier.

The 2nd edition has more than 20 service provider categories. Providers listed completed a survey attesting to the inclusiveness of their services. The guide also includes questions to ask when interviewing a service provider about specific needs and visual cues to look for that indicate an LGBT-welcoming environment.

The guide can be downloaded or picked up at community locations including Quatrefoil Library.

Professional Organization News

As you may already know, AASECT is tuning 50 in 2017! To begin planning our 50th Anniversary celebrations, we would like to form a planning committee that will be responsible for planning/leading the activities that will be celebrated during the 2017 Annual Conference in Las Vegas, NV, June 13-17, 2017.

The 50th Anniversary Committee will consist of a small group of members that will brainstorm and plan ideas with the goal of bringing added visibility and recognition to AASECT, its programs and people; focusing on the future of AASECT while celebrating the past; and building an even strong sense of community for AASECT members. We welcome members of all ages and experiences with AASECT over the last 50 years. Members interested in joining AASECT's 50th Anniversary Committee should submit any celebration ideas and their current CV to Executive Director, Michael Chan, at mchan@bostrom.com
